How to Teach the Panjetan Pak to Children

The Panjetan Pak are at the heart of how Shia families talk to children about the Prophet’s (P.B.U.H) family. The word means the Five Pure Ones: the Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H), Imam Ali (A.S), Lady Fatima (S.A), Imam Hassan (A.S) and Imam Hussain (A.S). Here is how to teach them in a way a child remembers.
Who are the five?
- Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H), the final Messenger, mercy to the worlds.
- Imam Ali (A.S), his cousin and son-in-law, the gate of knowledge.
- Lady Fatima (S.A), the Prophet’s (P.B.U.H) beloved daughter, al-Zahra.
- Imam Hassan (A.S), the Prophet’s (P.B.U.H) elder grandson, a prince of peace.
- Imam Hussain (A.S), the Prophet’s (P.B.U.H) younger grandson, who stood for truth.
“Allah only wishes to remove impurity from you, O people of the House, and to purify you thoroughly.”
Quran, Al-Ahzab 33:33The Verse of Purification, which the Hadith al-Kisa connects to the five under the cloak.
The story of the Cloak (Hadith al-Kisa)
The best way into the Panjetan Pak is the story of the Cloak, called Hadith al-Kisa. It is narrated by Jabir ibn Abdullah al-Ansari, who heard it from Lady Fatima (S.A), and is recorded in books including Awalim al-Ulum.
One day the Prophet (P.B.U.H) visited his daughter Fatima and said he felt weak. He asked her to bring a Yemeni cloak and cover him. As he lay under it, his face shone like a full moon.
Hassan came and said, “Peace be on you, Grandfather. May I come under the cloak with you?” The Prophet said yes. Then Hussain came and asked the same, and he was welcomed too. Then Ali came, and then Fatima. When the five were gathered, the Prophet (P.B.U.H) raised his hands and prayed that Allah keep his family pure.
Allah spoke of the love of these five. The angel Jibril asked to join them, and was permitted. The Prophet said that whenever this event is told among his followers, mercy descends, angels seek forgiveness for those present, and troubles are eased.
Notice the details children love: the shining face, the little boys asking politely, the welcome, the angel asking for permission. It is a story of love and belonging.
